Hi John, That's its amazing bird perch, it's evolved a non flowering stem that allows sunbirds to pollinate the flower while keeping watch for predators. I use it as a fascinating example of evolution in my classes to show how flowers coevolve with their pollinators. A beautiful and most interesting plant.
