Dear Elaine, Looking at your pictures I first thought it was a Kniphofia in bud but then, it could also be one of the South American Eryngiums. The flowering structure looks like a bud and will be easier to identify when more developed. Does the plant have a bulb or tuber? Or is it just herbaceous? greetings from Germany, Uli
