I found the answer, I think, at the PlantZAfrica.com 
(http://plantzafrica.com/plantqrs/scadoxkath.htm/):
"The pseudostem is sturdy and fleshy with a diameter of up to 25 mm, and is 
usually purple spotted but can be plain and almost white."

....  Perhaps if grown in a green house or similar, the spots may not be so 
noticeable....
