I had good germination with seed from the Berlin Botanic Garden in 1993 but I was only able to keep it going for a couple of years, enough though for at least one bloom.

I believe that it can self pollinate - I have a vague recollection of
occasional seeds set on a plant of mine. Certainly I get selfing on
Gymnospernums, though I now have enough of them that they may cross
pollinate.
