I like Mark's suggestion re. Lapeirousia.

David, you didn't specify summer-growing or winter-growing.

If you're going for winter-growing bulbs, I think I'd mostly grow Romulea
species. They are small, easy to grow plants with big very colorful flowers.
Many have complex markings which reward up-close study. By picking the right
species you can have something in bloom from fall to spring. 

You could probably add in a couple of the smaller Geissorhizas if you want
more variety.

Among summer growers, I think a collection of Rhodohypoxis would make for an
amazing-looking seed tray.
