Crocus cages

I've got a significant crocus pest here which I have never caught in action, but it has learned to recognize the plastic baskets I use and will go down a line of these one by one, digging out whatever grows in the basket. Two years ago I lost a lot of crocuses and tulips to this pest. None of the baskets showed any evidence of having been disturbed from the sides or bottom, and every one which was disturbed was cleaned out. I'm guessing the culprits are rats: the baskets in question are at my community garden plots (allotment garden) about a mile from home. This site is a haven for rats and rabbits. And rats seem to be a lot smarter, more wary and harder to trap than mice.
