Window screen, weeds, and raised beds

When I mentioned recently that I had surrounded my raised beds with window
screening, HK asked for more info and maybe a picture. Here you go...

How I attached the screen: I built a rectangular frame over each of the
beds, with wooden strips at the top. Vinyl window screen is stapled to the
top, and I used binder clips to hold it on the bottom.

The weed reduction is good but not great. Tiny weed seeds that float in the
air (such as Dandelion seeds) seem to get through the screen in moderate
numbers. They are also probably sifting through the shade cloth roof that is
over the beds. Larger seeds (like the stickers from wild oats) poke halfway
through the screen and work their way through when the wind blows. The
screening has reduced the weed load, but I haven't achieved my no-weed
fantasy.

I wrote a post for my blog with more details on the beds, and some pictures:

Many, many thanks to all of you who advised me about bed construction when I
started this experiment two years ago! I read every note, and referred back
to them during construction. I am very happy with the results so far.
