I planted one large bulb around 15 years ago. It has grown into a large clump of bulbs some three or four feet across. It is in garden soil, neutral loam over clay, in a shady spot and moist for this garden, which is very dry. The necks of the bulbs are above the soil surface. It is growing through a large patch of geranium which presumably provides some winter protection. Went through hard winter of 2010/11 with no trouble.
