(Travis asked if there has been any research on beneficial microbes for bulbs.) The only info I'm aware of is the literature on growing Australian summer-dormant orchids. They are unearthly beautiful, but apparently absolutely require a symbiotic fungus, which makes them incredibly difficult to grow in cultivation.
