It depends where you get your carrots. If you get supermarket carrots they are washed and will rot if stored too long in the fridge or anywhere else . Any storage winter vegetable is not supposed to be washed as far as I know. That goes for potatoes too. I successfully store  unwashed carrots from my garden well till late winter in a cold cellar under the porch which is not ideal temperature (a bit too warm) in pails lined with plastic bags which are tightly tied.
