Crocosmia plague

I used to grow common crocosmia easily. It became so invasive I had to pull it out in wheelbarrow loads. In the last few years, a virus (?) seems to have infected the plants such that most plants seem to die before mid summer.
Have also noticed that a few of the hybrid varieties- like “Lucifer”- are no longer sold in catalogs (or elsewhere). Wondering if this is due to their susceptibility to this plague- whatever it is- or are there other reasons?
Is there any protection- either cultural or chemical- from this recent scourge?
