In nature the southern US species get much of their moisture in fall through spring and remain in leaf much of that time. Many of those rest in summer. The Mexican species are the opposite since they receive their rainfall in summer. The hybrids and some of the species can grow throughout the year with some minor rests. What they don't seem to appreciate is never having any rest.
