Bulbs that can thrive on neglect

Hi Gordon,

Years ago I organized a topic of the week for several years. There were
several topics on the best bulbs for specific regions.

Topics we discussed can be found in:

http://pacificbulbsociety.org/pbswiki/index.php/…

We discussed Bulbs for Pacific Northwest, Bulbs for Mediterranean
Gardens, Bulbs for Continental Climates - Upper Midwest, Bulbs for
Texas. It depended on finding a person in a particular region willing to
introduce the topic with his/her experience and then for others to share
as well.

I made wiki pages for the favorite plants people listed by color and
plants you can grow in the shade, but never found the time to make wiki
pages for some of the other topics discussed. I remember when I decided
to do the color pages being told by one of the other volunteers that I
would come to regret it and it was a really big job so I understood
later his advice. The Legacy Bulb pages came about because Kathleen
Sayce was willing to spend a fair amount of time creating text for me to
add to the wiki.

Ernie O'Byrne introduced the Bulbs for the Pacific Northwest. You can
see how his experience compares to yours:

And a lot of others responded which you can find in the archives for
that month (January 2003). It would take someone to come up with a
compilation from all the people's suggestions for a list. I agree that
knowing what you can easily grow is really helpful and the categories we
discussed were really broad and there are huge difference of
microclimates within them which makes a list only a starting point. My
climate in coastal Northern California is probably a combination of
Pacific Northwest and Mediterranean. Being coastal I have success with
entirely different bulbs than inland gardeners only a couple hours away.
I can grow things Southern California gardeners can't and they can grow
things I can't even if we are both Mediterranean. My list would only
contain a few of the things on your list.

Mary Sue
