On occasion, I have also found live Amorphophallus paeoniifolius tubers at Asian markets. The only time that I purchased one, the new foliage appeared to be virused, so caveat emptor. I guess plant viruses don’t affect edibility.

It’s worth keeping an eye open for other interesting bulbs and rhizomes at markets. That’s how I got my Curcuma longa and Alpinia galanga plants.

Looking at fresh udon noodles, rice noodles, looking, looking . . . and pick up a package of yam noodles. High fiber, no carbohydrates it says on the front. Turn it over and the ingredients are water, konjac flour, and calcium hydroxide. Aha! Bet I'm one of the few shoppers who know that konjac is (in it's other life, here on PBS) Amorphophallus.
