Thermogenesis

Yes Jane, I lived on the East coast for a while and it was always cool
to see the hole in the snow around the skunk cabbage. Thermogenesis
goes back at least 250 million years as many cycads do it.  I give tours
at Lotusland which has a large collection of these plants (>1000) and
periodically the garden is filled with an odd odor used to attract
pollinators.  Cycads evolved 60 million years before bees and wasps so
beetles and thrips are thought to do the pollinations.
