It is a native here in Victoria, BC, but in all cases I can remember it 
is in sites that go bone dry in summer, growing in a usually a 
not-too-thick layer of moss, debris, and soil on a rock outcrop.

In winter, those sites are wet but very well drained so the water isn't 
stagnant.

My impression is that it is a tricky plant unless you are in the "right" 
climate. Potted specimens are likely even trickier than those in the ground.
