There is an Dahlia imperialis at the JC Raulston arboretum in Rahleigh, NC
zone 7b. It blooms some years in November if the frost stays off long
enough. I was told it has struggled to come back after harsh winters but
always does and they do nothing extra ordinary to protect it. For what it's
worth.
