Tree dahlias (Dahlia imperialis ) are quite easy to see in Costa Rica. You need to visit the Cerro de la muerte in the Talamaca mountains Follow the Pan-American Highway from San José south, you go over the mountains then down towards the coast on road 234, there is a stretch of road going downward towards the pacific where they grow all along, it's a magnificent sight. Another way, is to stay near Quepos (Manuel Antonio) then drive south on the coast road 34, turn left up road 234 towards San Isidro de El General and just carry on till you see them, they're impossible to miss! They were still flowering in March 2010 when we visited. A visit to the Cerro de la muerte is a must anyway for botanists and gardeners, the paramo vegetation on the top is quite amazing. it's also a good place to see Quetzal.
