It will go dormant right away if it dries out during warm weather. It is bulletproof here if I water plentifully, even every day. They tend to be sold at cactus and succulent shows in pots that are far too small, growing in a mix that is far too loose, drying out far too fast.

I grow mine in a round plastic pot of 12"/30.5cm diameter. I put a tiny tuber received from the BX into that pot years ago. I use a mix of local soil and commercial potting soil. It flowers a lot here.

I suggest you try again, in a very large container. Since you don't really get frost, you could probably leave it outside all winter, perhaps protected from any rain that might come.

I plan to repot mine and send tubers to the BX sometime this winter. I'll wait until I get an OK from Jane because there is no rush at all, and I'm sure the volunteers are burdened enough right now.
