Re: fungus gnats in germination/growing medium

I use only organic fertilizer which fungus gnats seem to thrive on. Many
of my bulbs and all my Clivia never get enough frost to control the gnats.
What I've come up with that takes care of the problem for me: I mix about
one tablespoon (15mL) of Mosquito BitsĀ®, which is readily available in the
US, in one gallon of water; let it sit for an hour or more; agitate/mix
thoroughly (the* Bacillus thur*. tends to settle to the bottom); and water
the seedlings and plants with this mixture. It may take several weeks to
see an absence of the gnats. The Bacillus affects only the larval stage
and it takes several generations to be fully effective. Also, the gnats,
the little buggers, will return at some point, so the regime needs to be
repeated when needed. I've seen absolutely no adverse effects on the
plants using the Mosquito Bits.

To those unfamiliar with Bt, you can search for *Bacillus thuringiensis
israelensis *on the internet.
