that's why cats should not be allowed outside.  

in places where cats are allowed outside, there's a huge drop in the numbers of birds... unless there are coyotes around.  where there are coyotes, there's a corresponding bird diversity.

Regarding vole control, I have found that since I got cats, my snake
population has gone down and my vole population has gone up.  Also, it
would help to get rid of perennial grasses.
