I haven't grown that species, but every time I get a bud that doesn't open,
I suspect low light levels (unless the plant is being blasted in full sun).

Looking at the distribution map on iNaturalist, your Massonia is distributed
along the southern coast of South Africa, from the winter rainfall zone
across to areas that get rain all year.

Those areas would not be very warm in winter (although they'd be a lot less
cold than Toronto). Think breezy and cool, with bright sunlight when it's
not raining.
