I know the grower that Schmuel is referring to. He grows the bulbs for cut flowers in Murietta California which is extremely hot and dry, almost desert. No water. No fertilizer. Just plant and cut or dig. I have written about them many times.  I also have grown these bulbs for many years and find they bloom in full sun but not shade.
