I'm not sure if it is still true, but when I was an administrator for this list there were a lot of digest subscribers. If you have subscribed to the list to get messages as they come in it may not seem to you a big deal if it includes previous messages. You can just read what is on the top. But if you are a digest subscriber including all of those previous messages make it challenging to find what the new message might be. If I were a digest subscriber lately I'd either be screaming or just skipping reading it. It doesn't take long to look at your message before you send it and delete all that came before unless there is a sentence or two that is meaningful to be included. This would be a kindness to digest subscribers and also clean up the archives.
