Any time I speak to students, from Middle School to grad students, I always take a few minutes to tell them one thing: Learn to write well! If you write clearly you will think clearly. Regardless of the field or specialty you end up in, if you can write clearly, all the other lab rats will end up working for you. Your proposals will get funded. Your award packages will win. Your people will get promoted. Your patents will be more likely to get through the USPTO. Engineers and scientists have an old saying that if you can't explain what you're doing to a 14-year-old, you don't understand it yourself.
