I find that most vinyl plant tags have a limited lifetime at least here in Santa Barbara's intense sun. They become very brittle very quickly and break off generally at the soil line. A friend showed me what he uses and I have switched to that. He finds old aluminum narrow Venetian blinds and cuts the 1 inch wide slats into whatever length he needs with scissors then marks them with a #2 pencil.
