Amaryllis belladonna - hybrids versus true species

I thought this sitation from Richard L. Doutt's 1994 "Cape Bulbs" might add another factor to the question of hybrids vs true species, based on color.  He quotes Les Hannibal ... "the daytime temperatures at the opening period of the individual blossoms of the floral umbel definitely establish the amount of red pigmentation that is present in the blossom."  He further indicated that cool, foggy temps (60-70F) along the coast (in California) chill the flowers to a near coral red, while those inland at higher temps may appear lighter pink or washed-out.  This was often my experience in hot inland Concord, California, where many Summer daytime temps usually approached 100F at bloom time in late July/early August.  Some years, we'd be lucky with cooler daytime temps at bloom, and I noticed my likely species A.belladonna produced darker pinks, although not like those I would see at the coast.  The late Wayne Roderick was convinced that the hybrids (with Brunsvigia) generally bloomed later than the species, although annual weather variances can affect bloom time as well.  Attached are two shots of different hybrid bulbs I obtained from the late William Welch (Bill-the-Bulb-Baron) blooming for me now in San Diego ... generally a month after the species blooms:
