How Often to Re-pot?

Judy,

I repot every two to three years and in between, as Jane does, I top off the soil mix and keep up on fertilizer. I find that regular mixes designed for pots tend to break down after 2-3 years and don't hold water as well. My troughs with rock garden plants which have a much more fast-draining mix can go longer, but even then it's possible to go too long, so every 4-5 years I rake back the gravel top dressing and add more potting mix or change it as after that period of time, weed seeds are on overload from surrounding areas.
