In gmail there are three dots (an ellipsis) at the bottom of the area 
you type your reply into. Click on those and the previous email appears 
and you can edit it in the usual way.

What causes maximum mess for everyone else reading the list is replying 
to a digest without removing the 99% of it which is not relevant.

There is not.

The thing that will end up with your images being lost is inlining them. 
This list demands images be attachments.

To find images, use the search facility in your email program, typically 
Ctrl+F and search for the word "scrubbed".


All this is an embarrassment to me, how I come to be responsible for 
inflicting stone age software on you I do not know.

I'll never get a job after this.
