Oh my goodness- I’m new to PBS but so excited to join in this conversation. I discovered Teaming With Microbes by Lowenfels & Lewis last year. Now I have 2 buckets in my garage bubbling with 4 air stones creating aerobic compost tea.I add molasses and vermicastings to feed the microbial soup! I live on the Oregon coast, so our soil tends to be more fungal dominant- trying to balance with more bacterial focused compost. Anybody else trying this brewing system?

They do indeed grow on sugar.  In normal situations, mycorrhizal fungi are
the transporters of sugar and whether you live or die depends on your
relationship to mycorrhizae.  In Ericaceae, there are even parasitical
plants that trick the mycorrhizae. They used to be considered saprophytes
and include Indian pipes, etc.  They also exist in other families but
typically have very attenuated growth due to the inflorescence being the
only important part.
