monocot seedlings without chlorophyll

I have always wondered about supplying sugar to the albino as we do in germinating orchids.  Can a plant possibly absorb glucose through the roots?  If so, it could certainly translocate it, but it could sure be a mess in the greenhouse, unless you were just growing one plant hydroponically. And even then you'd soon have a mold problem, not to mention being a magnet for all manner of vermin.

Is it possible that variegated morphs of shade-loving plants could be useful to the gardener who doesn't have any shade?
