uIt is called a Wallipini. Underground greenhouses have been used for
thousands of years by our ancestors in Meso-America (hence the name) and
Europe. Often integral with the living area creating an environment that
needed little extra heating in winter, and remaining cooler in a hot
summer. Still used in many parts of the world. Some lovely websites on the
subject, including some with detailed plans, and photos, and modern
versions used as beautiful living spaces.
