May 2021 bulb field trip in central California

Greetings,

So happy to see some good pictures from the May trip!

@Marc The lavender blooms on/near the summit of Mt. Pinos are Calochortus invenustus rather than C. splendens. The invenustus can be nearly stemless at the summit but knee-high further down the mountain (where they also bloom about a month earlier).

You can find C. splendens on the lower slopes of the mountain among sage brush and Hesperoyucca. There, at around 6000ft, you can find both the brilliant vermillion of C. kennedyi and a richly coloful population of C. venustus as John mentions (though it requires a good rain year for a satisfying bloom).

@JohnW: You have found C. kennedyi near Figueroa Mtn? Can you reply to my email address with more details about that tricky road? I have found C. catalinae, C. argillosus and C. clavatus on Figueroa Mtn but never C. kennedyi...

Mt. Pinos in late June could be another option for a fieldtrip...

I've found C. splendens reliable in that area, even in such dry years. You were close to the C. venustus red form population, but that blooms earlier...at least at the lower elevations. To the west, on the road up to Figueroa Mtn., there is a small population of C. palmeri and I've seen large populations of C. kennedyi up there as well, though on a VERY tricky road. There are nice populations of Allium howellii and Lewisia rediviva earlier in mid-spring. Up at the top of Mt. Pinos you'll see a wonderful population of Iris missouriensis and Veratrum californicum if you time it right. This might be a little late for those, and again its been dry.

And this is what was on top of that sheer roadcut...a few more C. superbus.
