Lilium davidii

I bought L. davidii from Diana Reeck, whose botanical travel group rescued
it years ago from a country kitchen in China. When they realized they were
dining on stuffed lily bulbs, they asked if there were still any raw ones
left in the kitchen and bought them all. Mine are descendants of one of
those.

I can't recall any fragrance, but will watch for it this year. Perhaps
someone with a better memory will post first. It's worth remembering that
people differ greatly in which fragrances they can detect. Plants can also
change fragrance according to time of day, targeting pollinators. I just
read about a plant (goat willow) that emits one fragrance during the day to
attract bees and a different one at night to lure in moths. You can find
this in today's phys.org, titled, "Striking a balance: Trade-offs shape
flower diversity."

I've had bad coyote problems in the nursery for six days in a row. They
have destroyed four hoses and engaged in a wide variety of strange
depredations. Anyone curious can find a post I made today, including trail
cam videos, on The Daily Bucket, a natural history site hosted by The Daily
Kos.
