Maybe they have a keen sense of smell for the horrid amine compounds in carrion, but ignore or are insensitive to mercaptans.  But they sure do love dead skunk!  There is also some evidence that they find food in some cases by sight, esp. in freshly worked fields where the food is still pretty fresh.

I haven't really thought about their seasonality but it seems like some are always here in E Tenn.  And we have lots of furry things out and about even in winter.
