 Hi Cody,

My frame is built in a stair-step manner with each "step" fronted with
cedar fence boards and is about 10 feet (3 m) long. There is another level
below the one in the picture, but it and the retractable cover were damaged
when we had 18 inches (45 cm) of snow over the St. Valentine's weekend.
The space under the frame is enclosed on the sides so it forms a large air
pocket underneath. The depth is set so that the rims of the posts are just
below the top of the fence board so the pots do not roast in the summer and
the air pocket below helps keep it cool as well and it seems to offer some
benefit in winter as I have lachenalia in there that have survived every
winter here while those I had out froze and were lost. Each tier holds 21
square pots. They are also set so that the board behind them drops below
the level of the rim of the pot so they won't slide off into the air space.

Some of the plants need to be in deeper pots soon but I still have to sort
that out. There are a lot more pots of various sorts all around the yard
for plants that have outgrown these pots.

This is located at the north end of the garden and is backed by a low
concrete wall and some shrubs that were there when we moved here.

In addition to calochortus and lachenalia I have a number of Irids and
Amaryllids as well as cyclamen.
