Bob
I think the point about a hard dry summer rest is important.
I let mine sit on the basement shelf without any moisture for the entire season.
I imagine the arid conditions they come from.

My S. mad. are about midway between Mike's and Arnold's.  Enjoying full sun on the south end of the greenhouse and happily overlapping some other things that are blooming.  So naturally I'm doing some diabolical cross pollinations.  If anything actually works, PBSers will be the first to know (OK, second to know after the USPTO...)
I got all those bulbs from ETGB and they bloomed nicely the first year, then languished because (I think) they were under-potted and I didn't give them a hard dry summer the first year I had them.  This year, I repotted into larger pots with an inch of promix, then a few tbsp of superphosphate granules, then more promix.  Set the roots in and filled the rest with promix, leaving maybe 1/4 of the bulb above the soil.  They spent another summer on the Dry Table of Death and came to life with a vengeance once the weather began cooling.  My languishing Urginea maritimas have likewise benefited from a similar improvement in their potting.  Duh.
The Lachs are coming to life, with L. viridiflora leading the way.  First buds might be open tomorrow.  That's a truly cool plant, as many members discussed last year., with the rare green-blue colors.  All the Lachs will carry the day until some of the Cattleyas and Hipps start blooming for Christmas.
Bob  sunny and cool in E Tenn
