Fred, I'm near you, NW of Boston. I was having a terrible time getting N filifolia to bloom well until this year, the summer of the deluge (30 inches of rain since May). Bottom line, they love water, at least for here. Mine are in a 6" pot with ProMix type soil, and get a half day of sun. Minimal low N fertilizer. Foliage was much more lush and green than usual, and I wound up with about 20 scapes in one pot. N masoniorum was double that.
