Yes, I think PBS should get a paid Zoom account for all the reasons you’ve noted, but also because you can get speakers from all over. I arrange speakers for Portland Orchid Society, and Zoom has allowed us to connect with lecturers from Papua New Guinea, Costa Rica, China, and India, not to mention places farther afield here in the US. Previously we drew from a more limited group of speakers based mostly on the West Coast.
