Costus Spectabilis

I grow Costus spectabilis and yes, it will grow if the rhizome is divided.  That growth might not start till spring though.  Normally during the growing season (its a summer rainfall African plant) its rhizomes wander in circles in the pot and branch occasionally.  Some will find their way to the drainage holes and start wandering out of the pot.  I often cut those off to grow new plants but since the rhizome is an underground stem it is capable of budding anywhere a node is.   It is an easy and spectacular species even without its large yellow blooms (which are also quite awesome). I dry my pots of it out for winter storage in a warm dry location inside, then out they go again for the next growing season.   If rhizome pieces emerging from the drainage holes break off then I will put them in a zip lock bag with some slightly moist sphagnum to keep the rhizome plump till I plant it which may be the next spring.  Ernie DeMarieIn NY where the great fall migration of pots has begun and cleaning and watering the winter growing pots is also just starting.
