Othonna cakilefolia hybrids

Carl
I would agree with the need for a pumice substrate for the Othonnas.
I have O. perfoliata for three years .
The tuber escaped into the plunge bed through the  holes in the bottom of the pot.
The plunge bed is a mix of sand and pea gravel.

The leaves are twice the size of the ones grown in the pots.

Subject: [pbs] Othonna cakilefolia hybrids

Made my subject more relevant…

Thanks for the feedback!  And yes, Ernie, the hybrids are mostly fertile in my experience.  So I’ve been able to cross and recross them giving rise to a lot of color variation.  Some are very robust whereas others are fragile as can be so I have had a lot of losses.  I’m getting to the point that I think pure pumice is safest to grow them.

The inspiration to grow them came from Steven Hammer years ago when he supplied me with seeds saying I should get a lot of different colors.  I sowed them that fall and got nothing.  It was only later that I heard from another bulb enthusiast that some winter bulbs germinated much better if sown in spring, dry, and allowed to bake dry all summer before commencing watering in the fall.  That turned out to be exactly what these seeds needed.  And like other plants sometimes germination could be delayed but the summer baking usually produced abundant results.  I’ll send more photos soon.
