I used to visit the Arnold Arboretum where a large stand of Franklinia surprisingly appeared to thrive.  I think it is supposed to be a relict species; Bartram's discovery of the plant in Georgia was never repeated.  I believe the plant is extinct in the wild now. The link may be helpful for those attempting to cultivate the plant in their garden.  I have read that all plants in cultivation now are descendants of the one Bartram discovered on the banks of the Altamaha R in the 18th c.
