Subject: Wachendorfia in California

Hi Nan,

I bought my Wachendorfia from Annie’s Annuals in Richmond several years ago. I have donated seed of Wachendorfia thyrsiflora to PBS in the past, and have some seed now if you’d like some — send me your address I’ll post you a few. It’s very easy to raise from seed.

The trick to growing this species successfully is to make sure it always has wet feet. We get a lot more rain here in Portland than you do, but summers are dry, so I have my plants growing in a bed that has one of those inexpensive plastic wading pools completely buried in it to hold a good water supply. I direct water from a downspout into the pool, which is filled with gritty rock and gravels. I might add a bit of water in the summer. You may not even have gutters or downspouts on your home, and water is precious where you are, but a buried pool will be very water-wise, and will allow you to grow this species, and other water-loving geophytes such as Hesperantha (Schizostylis) coccinea.

Charles

Can anyone tell me if there are Wachendorfia that will tolerate just 9 or 10" of rainfall in a year? And does anyone know a source in California - Southern California preferably.
