Hello all, At yesterday's PBS Board meeting, we learned that our newsletter, The Bulb Garden, has not appeared for a while because editor (and PBS secretary) Emil Friend has not been able to obtain contributions from members. Even though some peopleĀ have mainly moved on from the age of print on paper, The Bulb Garden is still a valuable benefit to members, allowing people to read illustrated articles of some length. We need help to keep it going! Can you think of some aspect of your gardening, nature travel, or plant science that would interest us? You don't need to be a professional writer or photographer. I do write professionally, but it's not easy for me to provide decent photos; yet I send in what I can. As a developmental editor, I sometimes created articles and even whole books from a "heap" dumped by an author at the publisher. If you want to send PBS a heap, send it to me and I'll help turn it into a feature for The Bulb Garden. Don't be shy about working with an editor; it is teamwork to reach the same goal. If you would rather write in a language other than English, we have a good group of bilingual members who will translate your work. Here are some ideas. What challenges do you meet in growing bulbs in your climate and site? Are you drawn to the geophytes of a particular part of the world, and why? Have you done any hybridizing, with what techniques and what results? Do you grow bulbs in a greenhouse, in frames, in a rock garden, or in the open garden, or do you have some combination of those? Do you have a special interest in fragrance, particular flower colors, miniature plants, winter flowers, or something else? Would you like to discuss the books that have helped you most in growing geophytes? Take this as a start, or start something on your own. Please write to me directly <janemcgary@earthlink.net> if you'd like to chat individually about keeping The Bulb Garden going.
