So it is kind of cool that Hippestrelias seem to be more fertile and forgiving. I have two cultivars of the Howardara and one blooms profusely most of the summer but thus far hasn't yielded any pods. This is another reason I have trouble fully accepting the results in that fairly recent paper where they lumped a huge number of different former genera all into Zephyranthes. Including Sprekelia—it is now just another couple of species of Zephyranthes. And yet, they kept Hippeastrum as a separate sister genus of Zephyranthes. It is true that the two Sprekelia species end up as a sister group of all the other original Zephyranthes when you sequence their DNA. But it’s odd that there hasn't been any hybrids of the Sprekelia species with any of the original Zephyranthes/Habranthus species, and yet there have been multiple successful attempts of hybrids of Sprekelias with Hippeastrums. --Lee Poulsen San Gabriel Valley, California, USA - USDA Zone 10a Latitude 34°N, Altitude 340 ft/100 m _______________________________________________ pbs mailing list pbs@lists.pacificbulbsociety.net https://lists.pacificbulbsociety.net/cgi-bin/… Unsubscribe: <mailto:pbs-unsubscribe@lists.pacificbulbsociety.net> PBS Forum https://…
