We live about 1/2 a mile from SMG and many if not most of our plants came from there.  Randy Baldwin did a splendid job of running one of the best nurseries in the country.  The website alone is a rich source of information about plants you cannot find anywhere else.  When its closing was announced to be replaced by housing is seemed like a bad dream and when I drive by it almost daily it saddens me to no end when I see the construction equipment where the boxed trees used to stand.  I contributed seed from a couple of pants which he grew and sold.

Does anybody have any suggestions for flowering Eucharis? I have read the Wiki entry and I'm not convinced the recommendations for drought and temperature stress are accurate, unless I've been applying them at the wrong season.

I have a Eucharis sp. I bought for my mother over 30 years ago from Tropiflora. The original tag is gone, but I definitely recall the catalog said they thought it has different leaves from E. amazonica. Of course, it may be something else.

She grew it in a window with bright indirect light and watered it all year, most years. Ambient temperature did not vary much, around 72 degrees F. At my suggestion she withheld watering in some Winters and allowed the plant to drop all its leaves. It was fertilized about 5-6 times a year with a 20-20-20 and micronutrients fertilizer at 1 teaspoon per gallon. During this time it grew strongly and multiplied well. It produced one flower once, during a year when it had been watered through the Winter.

I have had it two years. I have kept it much farther from a window. I have withheld water in Winter and allowed it to wilt between waterings one Winter, and defoliate the other Winter. When I water in Spring it produces a luxuriant set of leaves. My household temperatures in Winter are much cooler than in Summer, in the 50s at night / 70s in the day. Still no flowers.

I wrote to Tropiflora. They replied their database does not show any accessions other than E. amazonica. Their long-time grower has already quit as the company shuts down, but their bromeliad specialist doesn't have any idea what triggers flowering.

 Leo,
Is this the plant that you are referencing.  Cargo Report    search on the downloaded page
I had one once that bloomed but then split into a number of smaller bulbs.  I think I bought it from Parks Seed.  I couldn't get it to bloom again.  It may need a critical size to bloom.

I had one once that bloomed but then split into a number of smaller bulbs.  I think I bought it from Parks Seed.  I couldn't get it to bloom again.  It may need a critical size to bloom.

Hi Leo,

Have you tried fertilizing it with blossom booster for a few weeks and just before it's normal flowering period?

I too keep trying to get Eucharis to bloom.

Three people I have known with luck:

Person 1: SE Ohio. Inside in winter and under canopy outside all summer.
All in bloom in July or August when we visited. Only plant the couple
cultivated, maybe 20 pots.

Person 2: received a Eucharist bloom as a high school prom wristband
corsage 50 years ago. Bought a bulb soon after and it grows in the middle
of her living room, never moves outside, watered and flowers every year.

Person 3: sister bought bulbs, planted in pot which sits on top of her
dryer in the utility room for about the last ten years. Blooms every year.
Sometimes watered, never fertilized. West window but no direct sun in
Seattle.

Me: have been trying everything to get blooms but to no avail. Maybe I pay
too much attention to them. Good luck Leo. It is a gorgeous bloom.

Mine never bloom either. I've followed all the expert advice. I've even
tried crazy advice like freezing it (cold winter storage). The plant just
grows lush and green no matter what. A local university conservatory gets
it to bloom in a temperature and humidity controlled greenhouse. Perhaps
the low humidity is the culprit for my persistent failure.

I sent this to Leo privately, since it's from me driving an AI and not
personal experience (I haven't grown Eucharis). But as others are having
the same problem - and at Leo's suggestion - I'll toss it out here with
a big warning.

If the AI can be believed, all of the former Eucharis species (now sunk
into Urceolina) come from fairly similar habitats - constantly warm,
relatively high humidity, consistent rainfall most of the year. While
they can survive colder temperatures and drying out, defoliation is a
stress response, not something that routinely happens in nature, and not
usually a trigger for flowering. It believes the correct procedure is:

- let the plant become pot bound
- let it build up a "lush canopy" of foliage
- *raise* the temperature - it suggests 80-85 F - and do not fertilize,
or switch to a low-nitrogen, higher phosphorus food
- after 4 weeks, reduce the temperature back to 65-70 F (about 15 F).

It thinks you'll have flowers about 12 weeks later. It gave this link in
support:

https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/urceolina-amazonica/

Again - caveat hortulanus, AI generated content. I try to limit the
sources of information an AI accesses and keep it on track by precise
phrasing and hard boundaries, but in this case I didn't follow up every
link it provided, or try to independently verify all of its claims.

Would someone be kind enough to identify this bulb, which recently bloomed in my hoop house. I’m in Zone 9.

Many thanks,

Subject: Flowering Eucharis
Date: Wed, 15 Jul 2026 22:24:15 -0700

I have had a pot of Eucharis amazonica for about 28 years, kept as a house plant in Salem, Oregon. In that time I have divided it twice, it’s only bloomed a handful of times but this past year was one of its best and I’m hoping for a repeat performance. The only thing different was that I put it out on a covered patio in September where it got night time temps into the high 40’s and low 50’s regularly. I do let it dry out pretty good in between waterings but don’t do a really big seasonal drought period. I’m going to try the patio in the fall again this year to see if the cooler temps were the trick.

Subject: US BX 512 OPEN FOR REQUESTS
Date: Sun, 19 Jul 2026 16:05:56 -0400

All: Please read this post in its entirety.
**This BX will be open for orders until Wednesday, July 22 2026 at 9:00
p.m. PST**

Standard rules apply for this BX:

Kindly review the list below and email me with your request(s) at
*bulbexpbs@gmail.com* <bulbexpbs@gmail.com>.
I will send a simple acknowledgement of your email. Should you not have a
response from me within a day or so, please resend.

*Be sure to include your full name, current address and PLEASE advise if
you have moved recently so I may update databases.*

Bulb shares are $4 each.

Kindly provide *both *the number and corresponding name of the item. This
is important to avoid confusion

This will be a lottery (however, if you did not receive something you were
especially keen on last round, kindly advise and I will try to assure some
accommodation. Also, if there is something you really are looking to
receive, it helps for me to know this.) As per usual, any spelling
errors are mine.

You must be current in your membership and you must be up-to-date on BX/SX
charges. If you are uncertain, feel free to check with Jane McGary or
Arnold Trachtenberg. Be advised that should I ask you if you have an
outstanding charge, it's not an accusation: it's to help us keep track of
payments as we occasionally do not receive a proper notification/payment
assignment in the PayPal account.

KINDLY NOTE:

Orders should be paid *upon receipt* through the PBS website at:
<https://www.pacificbulbsociety.org/pbsforum/index.php?page=BXpay*>

Please be sure to reference the BX number above (*512*) when paying as this
helps us with accounting.
*You are still free to send payment via check if that is your preference.*

No orders to anywhere but the US and (sometimes) Canada can be entertained
at this time. We cannot furnish the appropriate phyto docs to other
countries.
*Be advised that there are items that are only one share available.*

Bridget -

Thanks for doing this!

I am interested in BX 512:

28 Freesia alba, laxa
(Do you think this freesia laxa alba? Or freesia alba with a laxa
selection?)

25 Moraea collima/villosa

I'm in good standing and have $25 credit.

Thanks much, - Julia
