Subject: new cooperation between PBS and MGF
Date: Sun, 7 Jun 2026 22:39:19 +0100

New Cooperation PBS and MGF

Dear Members of the Pacific Bulb Society,

We want to inform the membership that we are launching a new cooperation
between the PBS and Mediterranean Gardening France (MGF). We are very
grateful to Chantal Guiraud, who is the manager of the MGF seed fund and
who came across with the idea. This cooperation will be evaluated for
one year. If it turns out to be successful, it will continue; if not, we
will discontinue it. Please read the instructions carefully to avoid
frustration.

All paid members of the PBS can from now on participate in the
activities of the MGF, such as garden visits, workshops and
presentations, provided that all MGF members can be accommodated. You
find the current activities on the bilingual MGF website
https://mediterraneangardening.frAs practically all activities take
place around the French side of the Mediterranean, it is worthwhile
checking the website if you travel to this area.

The other benefits of the new cooperation vary depending on where you
live: in the EU, in the USA, in the UK, or in another country. We are
facing severe restrictions between different countries when it comes to
sending seed. As a society we have to stick to the rules, hence the
different versions and limitations of this cooperation.

*EU members of the PBS*can order seed from the MGF seed fund, which
includes access to the index seminum of the private Botanical Garden of
Château Pérouse near Nîmes in France. Each paid PBS member is entitled
to 10 packets of seed per year free of charge. The expense of seed and
postage is covered by PBS membership dues. Please state that you are a
PBS member when ordering. Orders must be sent to Chantal Guiraud (and
not to Martin Bohnet, who runs the PBS seed exchange)Please follow the
instructions on the website seeds@mediterraneangardening.fr The MGF seed
fund depends on your generosity, so please consider donating seed.

Here is the MGF seed
fundhttps://mediterraneangardening.fr/mgi-seed-collection-collection-de-graines-mgi/

And here is the index seminum of Château
Pérousehttps://www.chateau-perouse.com/tuinen/index.php?route=product/category&path=3
<https://www.chateau-perouse.com/tuinen/index.php?route=product/category&path=3>

*US members of the PBS*can only order seed from Château Pérouse, and not
from the MGF.

In order to avoid trickling in orders to Château Pérouse repeatedly, a
representative selection of seed will be chosen by the US seed exchange
manager and offered to the US membership in a procedure similar to the
usual seed exchange. The seed will be sent from France to the US in
bulk, using a Small Lots of Seed permit, which will limit the number of
packets to 50. Individual orders from Château Pérouse are not possible,
so please refrain from attempting that. The first offering is scheduled
for autumn sowing this year. We are very grateful to Jan-Willem Vos, the
owner of Château Pérouse, and his team for their generosity and support.

*UK members of the PBS and members from other countries*can participate
in garden visits and other activities of MGF. But unfortunately no seed
orders from an EU country are possible. There may be a (costly)
possibility to order seed from the US seed exchange to the UK. All UK
members will receive a personal email from a mailing list with further
information.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact Uli Urban,
coordinator for Europe atjohannes-ulrich-urban@t-online.de

What a great project!  Many thanks to Uli and the Board for their initiative, and it will be fun to see how this develops.
Is there some way we can reciprocate by sharing our seeds, or is the US importation process unique because of our "small lot seed" category?  Seems like a shame to take and not give something back.

Hello Bob,

Thank you for your comments.
The only legal way to send seed to the European Union or the UK is to accompany it with a phytosanitary certificate. Apart from the time and effort required to fulfill the requirements of such a permit the sheer cost is probably a limiting factor: 70$ for 7 packets of seed.
Your point of taking but not giving back is quite important. This is the reason US members cannot order from the MGF seed fund. It is not large enough to remain sustainable if that would happen.
That also underlines the generosity of the owner of Château Pérouse who is not receiving but still allowing access to the seed fund by the SX manager in the US.
Bye for now

Uli

I have just perused the list available from Chateau P and it is wonderful, looking forward to getting some seeds. Also explored on their site the individual resource on sowing advice and their experiences with the individual seed , most helpful.
Greetings Zone 9b , getting very hot in the afternoons Ottoline

It took a long time, but it appears that the people who murdered Rod and
Rachel in 2018 have been found guilty. Sentencing is next.
https://www.ladbible.com/news/uk-news/botanists-rod-rachel-saunders-sentencing-519277-20260610

It is still painful for me all these years later and having all the news
stories use the picture from the wiki that my husband took when we were
visiting makes it even harder. Still, it is good there is closure for
family and friends.

Thank you for sharing this, Mary Sue. It has been a while since I checked
the status of the case. It is sadly small comfort to know that a
conviction has resulted.

Mary Sue,

Just as a PBS member, I wanted to say that I'm sorry for the terrible loss
of your friends,
especially under such shocking circumstances.
Your note sent me to look at the Silverhill Seeds website, and how lovely
to know that your friends
created something so valuable and lasting.

I understand what you're saying about the photo being painful, but if it is
that one with the pink
gladiolus, it conveys so much. I appreciate it.

Best, - Julia

Hi Mary Sue.I feel the same way, I still think of them often, especially when out in my gardens where some of their plants still grow.  I hope the criminals who took them from us never see the light of day again (there is no capital punishment in SA as far as I know) even if it can't bring Rod and Rachel back. Ondine wrote to some of us and is seeking some information for a closing statement she will make at the sentencing.   One was about what they have published.  I can't locate the date but know that Rachel wrote and article for the North American Rock Garden Society journal on cold hardy Romulea species, I think in the 1990s but I havent been able to track it down.  If anyone knows they should contact Ondine at Silverhill Seeds email address.  Ernie DeMarie

Hello Ken,
Thank you for passing on the news. It certainly been a long time coming. I did not know that the perpetrator had been apprehended.
It is extremely sad to think about anyone committing such a crime. Rod a Ratchel were always so helpful.
Kind regards

I am hoping someone might share the best way to mail ripe Scadoxus puniceus seeds. The fruits are fleshy and ripe now. I am concerned about finding a way that I can send them without the seeds going moldy.

Thanks so much

If I'm remembering correctly, when ripe, the soft red flesh of the berry
will wipe off the fleshy seed, which can be shipped clean. If the flesh is
firm, ship the berry clean and intact. Use paper packing material, glassine
or toilet paper for bulk, and if shipping berries, don't crowd them in case
one starts moulding. The bare seeds can be shipped easily as long as they
are not damaged...a few days in glassine are no problem.

As Arnolds says, ship in a box, automated machinery will squish a padded
envelope flat.

Hello Nan,

I would not worry too much. It depends for how long they will be traveling until they reach their destination but even if there should be some mold, it would not matter.
I would not peel off the red skin and wrap them into dry kitchen towel and pack them in a way that they don’t get crushed. If you peel off the red skin the seeds might dry out which is worse than some mold. They need to be peeled before sowing as the seed coat of many seeds contains germination inhibitors.

Hope that helps

Hi All,

The idea came from my eagerness to condense the shipping process of
recalcitrant seed and I put interest out without receiving confirmation
from Nan about a donation. I apologize for the false alarm!

Another note, there are many incoming donations and an updated inventory
list will be available soon! Thank you for your understanding.

Nan- I'm not an expert on the subject, but I have had better results with recalcitrant seeds in the usps when they are sprinkled with cinnamon, and loosely wrapped with a little damp paper towel in a breathable bag, via next day delivery. Whatever you do, don't wrap them tightly in plastic... they'll ferment almost overnight.
Good luck!

Thanks so much for this input. That's what I was worried about.

It's interesting to read all the different ideas about how to deal with
this seed. I've always removed the other skin and let the seeds dry
off.  Recalcitrant seeds when Rod and Rachel were sending them never had
the skin on them. And although I agree that boxes are probably the best
I've also packed them in plastic used pill bottles with tape over the
top or old slide boxes (I'm a great recycler) or anything else that
seems strong enough to protect them. I never got a report back from all
I sent that the seeds were damaged, even some I sent to cold climates in
late fall. If you wait too long they start sprouting or shriveling and
then success is much less so it is wonderful news that Lindsey is
considering offering these kind of seeds right away.
