Hello All,

Here are some informations about my donation to the current BX
> Bulbs
>
> Albuca grandis, Bulbili. Yellow, impressive, 1,5m, winter growing
Tall winter growing and summer dormant bulb. Growing in sand in coastal fynbos on the West Coast of the southern Cape in South Africa. Towering above the low fynbos vegetation. These bulbs can swap a growing season and remain healthy and dormant, so never discard a pot „with nothing in it“…..
>
> Amaryllis belladonna 'Rose Foncé' sponaneous seedlings 1 or 2 years old
Spontaneous seedlings in the wrong place from a particularly good clump. This form is taller and brighter pink than the regular form, originally from the defunct nursery Bulb Argence. Will show some variation.
>
> Aponogeton distachyos, flower size
Flower sized dormant tubers. Start immediately in cold water, don’t put them into a heated aquarium. Warm water signals them beginning of dormancy. Winter growing summer dormant in warm climates but may grow year round in cooler climates. Needs full sun, flowers are edible (waterblommetjes) can be extremely invasive in warmer climates and must be kept away from natural aquatic habitats. I grow mine in pots which go into a large ceramic container on our terrace to replace a summer flowering dwarf waterlily. It will flower all winter and is a major attraction with visitors.
>
> Bunsvigia josefinae, from seed from Lauw de Jager 2022
Grown on from seed from Lauw de Jager from said Bulb Argence. Winter growing, summer dry dormancy. Will need some more years to get to flowering size
>
> Crinum bulbispermum, this year's seedlings
One of the easiest Crinum to grow, older bulbs are frost hardy if planted very deep.
>
> Gladiolus dalenii green flowered. grown-on bulbili
Spectacular jade green flowers, principally summer growing but in my garden behaving more and more like a winter grower. Will probably need another season of growing on before flowering.

> Seed
>
> Amaryllis belladonna Hybrids, very early, good reds, from seed from Bill Welch
These are a mixture of seeds from very early flowering hybrids raised from seed from Bill Welsh from California. He sent a large batch of seeds in 2017 when it was still possible….. very good colours, tall and some have radially arranged flowers which indicates Brunsvigia genes. Being so early they might be more suitable for cooler climates. But winter growing, foliage does not tolerate much frost.
>
> Anemone palmata
Charming Portuguese native, grows on both acidic and alcaline soil, winter growing and summer dormant.
>
> Campanula primulifolia, rare Monchique endemic
Impressive tall Campanula, 1,5 m with large mid blue bells. Grows in year round wet places in seeping water but can be successfully grown in moist garden soil. Easy from seed, self seeds in my garden into moist pots. Grows at higher elevation and may take some light frost but I don’t know how hardy it is. It always grows on acidic soil. Behaves like a short lived perennial or biannual, no summer dormancy. Not tuberous, but……
>
> Cyclamen persicum, pink, dark eye
>
> Cyclamen persicum white, silver leaf
>
> Cyclamen peseudibericum
All three are winter growing, spring flowering and summer dormant.
All Cyclamen seeds have a fairly hard and water repellent seed coating. Germination results are much better and faster when seed is soaked in lukewarm water with a drop of dishwasher liquid. This improves water uptake. Sow those seeds which have swollen and let the others soak a day or two longer until they also swell.
>
> Euphorbia monchiquensis, rare Monchique endemic
Another rare endemic of the Serra de Monchique. Tall sub shrub up to two meters but often shorter. Spectacular greenish yellow flowers in late spring and early summer, goes kind of half dormant after that. Makes a large tuber. Best pruned to the ground after flowering. Grows on acidic soil, I don’t know if it will tolerate lime and also I don’t know how frost hardy it is.
>
> Fritillaria lusitanica
Another Portuguese native, grows on a range of different soils. Winter growing summer dormant
>
> Iris foetida
Native here, arrived in the garden spontaneously, attractive long lasting orange fruit. Evergreen foliage, good in dry shade.
>
> Iris spuria, yellows
From the garden of John Lavranos
>
> Narcissus bulbocodium, early form
Very early flowering form, easy from seed, wild from the land of a friend nearby
>
> Narcissus papyraceus, wild form
Grows in large swaths and flowers in mid winter. Strongly fragrant but many people dislike the smell. Often standing in water at flowering time. Easy from seed but must never dry out during growth.
>
> Romneya coulteri
Tall and vigorous sub shrub from California. Very difficult to establish. It either fails or becomes a weed. Mine is small and so far well behaved. Very beautiful in flower.
>
> Tulipa sylvestris ssp australis, Algarve native, floriferous
This is the algarvian form of Tulipa sylvestris. It is floriferous. In habitat it grows in scrub in sunny places in between limestone boulders.
