I was curious about the correct name for #42, Ornithogalum bracteata. As the main person who tries to keep the wiki up to date with the current taxonomy, I find it a thankless and challenging task that takes a lot of time. So when I tackle it, it often takes much longer than I anticipate and sometimes like in this case at the end of the search there is no clear answer and after all that time, I am reluctant to spend more time explaining it on the wiki. If you look up Ornithogalum brateata on WorldFloraOnline or Plants of the World Online or IPNI you don't find it. IPNI lists two Ornithogalum bracteatum so it was named twice, once by Thunb. in 1794 and once by Torr. in 1828. The Thunb. one is considered a basionym (the original name the new name is based on) for Albuca bracteata. Plants of the World Online lists Albuca bracteata (Thunb.) J.C.Manning & Goldblatt as a synonym for Albuca canaliculata. Plants of the World Online lists these synonyms for Albuca canaliculata: Albuca bracteata (Thunb.) J.C.Manning & Goldblatt in Taxon 58: 93 (2009) Eliokarmos caudatum (Aiton) Raf. in Fl. Tellur. 2: 24 (1837) Fenelonia bracteata (Thunb.) Raf. in Atlantic J. 1: 145 (1832) Loncomelos caudatum (Aiton) Dostál in Folia Mus. Rerum Nat. Bohemiae Occid., Bot. 21: 15 (1984) Ornithogalum bracteatum Thunb. in Prodr. Pl. Cap.: 62 (1794) Ornithogalum caudatum Aiton in Hortus Kew. 1: 442 (1789) Ornithogalum longibracteatum Jacq. in Hort. Bot. Vindob. 3: 18 (1777) Ornithogalum massonii J.F.Gmel. in Syst. Nat., ed. 13[bis].: 551 (1791), nom. illeg. Ornithogalum scilloides Jacq. in Pl. Hort. Schoenbr. 1: 46 (1797) Stellarioides longibracteata (Jacq.) Speta in Stapfia 75: 173 (2001) Urginea mouretii Batt. & Trab. in Bull. Soc. Bot. France 68: 438 (1921 publ. 1922) Urophyllon caudatum (Aiton) Salisb. in Gen. Pl. Liriogamæ: 36 (1866), not validly publ. Photos from iNaturalist are under Albuca bracteata so perhaps people in South Africa are still using that name. And it is the name we have on the wiki. If you look for Ornithogalum longibracteatum or Albuca bracteata on World Flora Online you will find it is a synonym for Stellarioides longibracteata (Jacq.) Speta with the note: "This name is reported by Asparagaceae as an accepted name in the genus Stellarioides (family Asparagaceae). The record derives from WCSP (data supplied on 2025-08-13) which reports it as an accepted name (record 287814)." Lifestyle seeds offers this: Ornithogalum longibracteatum (Albuca bracteata, Stellarioides longebracteata) I am reminded of when Speta worked on Scilla. Some of his proposals were accepted and the names changed and some were not. Many years ago a very wise member of the pbs list said that as long as we kept the name of the author after the name of the plant even if that name is considered a synonym, we are still correct. I try to add authors when I change a page if they aren't there and have had a few helpers over time assist as we didn't anticipate this challenge when we started on the wiki so long ago. If anyone is still reading this and has extra time, he or she could look to see which wiki pages still need the name of the person who named that plant added and let me know or better still be willing to learn how to add the names.
