Aponogetonaceae

Aponogetonaceae is a family consisting of only one genus, Aponogeton, with 40-50 species of herbaceous aquatic plants. They can be found in Africa, Asia, and Australasia. The tolerate tropical to warm temperate regions. Asian and African species go through dormancy periods by relying on either tubers or rhizomes. Asian species are triggered into dormancy by temperature, whereas African species are triggered by rainfall. Some species are cultivated for their edible tubers while others are cultivated in aquariums. A notable, but difficult to cultivate species is Aponogeton madagascariensis whose leaves are net-like.
